“Attempted kidnapping of a child. 2400 North Damen; Damen and Fullerton,” a voice on the radio said. “The child is safe and OK, but the offender, who was in a white box truck, then fled…”
The attempted kidnapping happened near a busy intersection.
“The fact that that even happened is completely disgusting,” Edwin Campos, an area worker, said.
Campos and colleague Karima Manouzi work nearby and said they were unaware of what was happening.
“We heard nothing, and that’s the most horrifying part of it all. Like, we were all here,” Manouzi said.
After the attempted kidnapping, police said the suspect went to a nearby carwash and carjacked a woman after getting out of a white van.
“I guess he jumped in the front seat while she was vacuuming the backseat,” the voice on the scanner said.
Neither the child nor the carjacking victim was harmed, but residents said they are concerned.
“Scary to know that just being out in the middle of the day, running errands, doing basic stuff, that something like that could happen,” Bucktown resident Emily Varjan said.
Varjan and her roommate, Kelly Burns, said they have been to the carwash before. Burns said she was the victim of a separate carjacking years ago and now takes simple precautions.
“I didn’t have my phone, so I would just say keep everything you can on your body. Pepper spray, if possible,” Burns said.
Chicago police said in an update later Thursday that a person was taken into custody, but charges have not yet been filed.
