In New Mexico, Presbyterian Healthcare Services’ “Food as Medicine” approach closely aligns with the goals of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement. Through its Northern Roots and Southern Roots produce prescription programs, patients who are at risk for or managing diet-related conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity receive regular supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables, nutrition education, and support from community health workers. The programs are designed to address poor nutrition, a key driver of chronic disease.
The initiative also helps address food insecurity, a significant challenge in many New Mexico communities where healthy food can be difficult to access or afford. Participants receive free produce and practical resources such as cooking demonstrations and nutrition classes, helping families build healthier eating habits.
The produce prescription model also supports New Mexico’s agricultural community by sourcing locally grown fruits and vegetables through partnerships such as FreshRx. By connecting healthcare providers, community health workers, and local farmers, Presbyterian has created a preventive health model that improves nutrition, strengthens food security, and supports local food systems.
