U.S., UK, Canada and EU turn up pressure on North Korea to surrender nuclear arms as 2 African nations have also condemned Pyongyang

U.S., UK, Europe, and allies pressure North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons In a coordinated effort to disrupt Pyongyang’s military funding, international allies recently introduced targeted sanctions against key North

In a coordinated effort to disrupt Pyongyang’s military funding, international allies recently introduced targeted sanctions against key North Korean activities.

According to a statement reported by Anadolu Agency, the EU, Australia, and the U.S. enacted measures targeting North Korea’s “use of overseas workers, malicious cyber activities, and actors involved in unlawful DPRK (North Korea)-Russia cooperation”.

The coalition stressed that these measures aim to halt military developments and stop unauthorized cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.

The joint statement highlighted that “Their actions represent their efforts to disrupt the DPRK’s ability to support its unlawful development of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missiles, and to counter unlawful DPRK-Russia military cooperation”.

Furthermore, Anadolu pointed out that the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT) and the EU reaffirmed their shared commitment, “calling on it to abandon its unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programs, and taking action to counter DPRK attempts to violate and evade UN sanctions“.

At the same time, support for international non-proliferation standards is strengthening across Africa, where economic and political ties with North Korea have steadily declined. While many continental nations previously avoided public statements, South Africa and Egypt emerged as key exceptions by openly confronting North Korea’s nuclear actions.

An analysis from ISS Africa notes that South Africa strongly “condemned” Pyongyang’s nuclear detonations while expressing serious concerns regarding its ballistic missile launches.

Similarly, the Egyptian government took a firm public stance against the weapons program by “firmly condemning” North Korean nuclear testing.

This diplomatic shift is accompanied by broader measures taken across the continent to isolate the regime. For instance, Botswana broke off diplomatic relations with North Korea, declaring that it “does not wish to be associated with a Government which continues to display such total disregard for the human rights of its citizens”.

Additionally, African UN Security Council members including Angola, Egypt, and Senegal voted in favor of UN sanctions resolutions against Pyongyang, joining the global movement to enforce international security obligations.
