DALLAS, Pa. — Misericordia University students recently traveled to downtown Binghamton, New York, to attend the annual LUMA Projection Arts Festival, an event that transforms historic buildings into displays of light, sound and digital art created by international projection artists.
The trip, coordinated by Laine Little, Ph.D., director of Misericordia University’s Pauly Friedman Art Gallery, provided students with an opportunity to experience innovative forms of artistic expression while exploring the connections between art, architecture, history and technology.
“While LUMA is a visually fantastic experience, this is an opportunity for students to see how partnerships between practitioners of architecture, history, and technology can create enormous economic impact for mid-size cities,” said Little.

Through large-scale projection installations, the festival demonstrates how creative collaborations can transform public spaces, engage communities and contribute to local economic development. The experience also allowed students to explore how emerging technologies are expanding the possibilities of contemporary art beyond traditional gallery settings.
The Pauly Friedman Art Gallery regularly sponsors educational field trips to art festivals, galleries and museums, providing students with opportunities to engage with art and cultural experiences outside the classroom.
Priority registration is given to students enrolled in Little’s art history courses, with remaining seats made available to other members of the campus and surrounding community when space permits.
